More information for counselors:
If your public high school is one of the following 35 districts, your current sophomores and juniors are eligible to participate in the Capitol Region Interdistrict Leadership Academy (CRILA): Avon, Berlin, Bloomfield, Bolton, Bristol, Canton, Cromwell, East Granby, East Hartford, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Farmington, Glastonbury, Granby, Hartford, Hartland, Manchester, New Britain, New Hartford, Newington, Plainville, Portland, Region 10 (Burlington and Harwinton), Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Somers, Southington, South Windsor, Suffield, Vernon, West Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor, & Windsor Locks.
The Capitol Region Interdistrict Leadership Academy (CRILA) is a program created and operated by the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) through an interdistrict grant from the Connecticut State Department of Education. CRILA’s stated mission “is to provide a diverse forum whereby students will practice ethical and collaborative leadership through research and community services.” CRILA annually enrolls approximately twenty-five students in their sophomore and junior year from the thirty-five Greater Hartford school districts in a year-long leadership program.
The Leadership Academy begins in April of each year with orientation sessions followed by a week-long Outward Bound experience in June at the Colorado Outward Bound West School in Leadville, CO. The Outward Bound adventure provides students with a cohesive group experience that is designed to test and cultivate individual and group leadership skills. During the following school year (2014-2015), Academy students attend monthly class sessions in the evenings or on the weekends where they conduct a rigorous academic study of leadership, including meetings with local leaders, engaging with academic texts, and participating in self-reflection. The Leadership Academy’s culminating experience is a student-created and conducted community service project designed to have a positive impact on the Greater Hartford region. Going into its eighth year, CREC’s Leadership Academy offers young leaders in local high schools an unparalleled opportunity to develop and practice leadership in an authentic and meaningful way.
Students are chosen for CREC’s Leadership Academy based on their current academic standing and an essay which demonstrates their desire to participate, provides examples of their leadership experiences, and explains the challenges leaders of today face.
CREC is requesting the assistance of local high school principals and guidance counselors to help in the process of recruiting students for this program. The type of student the Academy is looking for is a student who:
· Has a proven ability to lead others in positive pursuits;
· Has strong academic standing;
· Can work successfully with peers and adults;
· Has an interest in and a commitment to community service.
There is no cost to the students or to the school districts for participation. All costs are covered by a State Department of Education interdistrict grant.
Please support CRILA in recruiting high quality applicants by:
· Giving copies of the CRILA Student Application 2014-2015 to any student that you think may make a good candidate;
· Placing copies of the application in the main office and guidance office;
· Posting the Recruitment Announcements around your office and school; and
· Encouraging students to visit the website for more information or to download the application: www.creccrila.com.
